Root canal treatment or endodontic is a dental procedure used to repair and save a damaged or decayed tooth (teeth). The inside of the infected tooth (pulp) is carefully cleaned and sealed and afterward restored with a crown or filling to prevent further damage or infection.
Why You Need Root Canal Therapy
Pulp infection or inflammation can cause serious dental problems, which call for a dental checkup. Here are the most common ones:
- Swelling on the face, neck, or head region
- Increased sensitivity to hot or cold foods
- Sharp pain after biting down
- Bone loss around the tip of the root
- Swollen gums forming an abscess
- And more…
The Procedure of Root Canal Therapy
Endodontic therapy requires one or two dental visits depending on the number of the canals to be treated. It involves the following procedure:
Consultation: Before having a root canal treatment, your dentist may take X-rays of the affected tooth to get a clear picture and assess the extent of damage and if there are any signs of infection in the surrounding bone.
The Process: Your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to the affected tooth to numb the area. To keep the area dry and free of saliva, a dental dam (rubber dam) is placed around the tooth.
S/he will move on to open the tooth up, take out the decayed nerve tissue, clean out debris, and disinfect all the root canals. Any abscess can also be drained at this time.
The root canal is then shaped ready for the filling. However, a temporary one is put in and left to settle. The tooth is monitored and upon healing, it is permanently filled and sealed.
Follow up: During recovery, avoid biting on hard foods to prevent irritating the wounds. If you require a crown fitted, you might have to schedule another visit.
Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?
Root canal therapy has the reputation of being painful. However, latest dental techniques have made the procedure more humane and painless.
