Wisdom teeth extraction refers to a surgical procedure for getting rid of one to all four troubling adult teeth. They are the permanent teeth at the back corners of the jaws – bottom and top. They mostly erupt between the ages of 18 to 27 years.
Why It Is Needed
Wondering why wisdom tooth extraction can be of value to you? Then these are your answers. Firstly, chances of them getting misaligned and shift position horizontally are very high. When this happens, it can cause the following damages:
- Impact adjacent second molars
- Affect the nerves and the jawbone
- Cause teeth overcrowding
- Make flossing and brushing difficult
You also need to have your wisdom teeth extracted if they remain enclosed under the jawbone and the soft tissue for longer than normal. The same case applies even for a partial eruption. If left untreated, they may cause bacterial infection leading to one or more of the following conditions:
- Jaw stiffness
- Swelling
- Pain
- General illness
- And others…
What is the extraction procedure?
Extracting your wisdom is somewhat an involving procedure on the side of your dentist. However, this doesn’t mean it’s rocket science meant to scare you away. In fact, many patients who have undergone it will tell you that it’s straightforward and painless. Below is the 3-step procedure.
Anesthesia: Upon consulting and scheduling the extraction of your ailing wisdom tooth, your dentist will inject an anesthetic to numb the area surrounding your tooth.
If you’re the type of people who get nervous and anxious about the procedure, your dentist may administer a sedative to make you calm and relax. Normally, it is administered in the form of an injection into your arm.
Actual extraction: The dentist will move on to extract your wisdom tooth. S/he may decide to make an incision if the tooth has not yet protruded to the surface. In some situations, to ease pressure and pain, your dentist may decide to cut the tooth into smaller pieces that are easy to extract.
Follow up: After successful completion of the wisdom tooth extraction procedure, your dentist will recommend that you take antibiotics if the surrounding gums had been infected prior to extraction. Additionally, the dentist will advise that for 24 hours after your tooth is extracted, you should not do the following:
- Avoid rinsing your mouth
- Avoid smoking or taking alcohol
- Don’t engage in strenuous physical activity
- Desist from taking hot drinks like soup and tea
